Where does Alder grow?
Alder (Alnus rubra) grows along the coast of North America from Northern California to Alaska. It is a pioneer species in that it is the first to regenerate after a disturbance such as logging or forest fire. Small nodules on its roots convert mineral nitrogen in the soil to a form that can be used by other tree species.
